ABOUT SCHOOL- The Principal's Address

DEAR VISITORS OF THE Secondary School of Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry in Ljubljana's WEBSITE

The imposing building of Ljubljana's School Centre was erected in 1911 for the needs of the "State Craft School", which was renamed the "Secondary Technical School" in 1920.

Up until the Second World War, four state schools and one provincial school worked under the same administration and they were:

  • the state technical school,
  • the state foreman school,
  • the state craft school for boys,
  • the state craft school for girls,
  • and the provincial musical instrument school.

After the Second World War, the growing industrialization brought about a greater need for technical professions in the area of chemistry, engineering, carpentry, electrical engineering, civil engineering. Professionals in these areas were educated at Aškerčeva Street and in dislocated locations in Nova Gorica, Novo mesto, Kranj, Postojna, Celje, etc.

Social and economic development led to changes in vocational education as well, and new schools were created, programs were changed, improved. The new social conditions demanded a different kind of organization of schools and institutes, and so, in the year 2000, Ljubljana's School Centre was established, with a unified administration and four independent units.

Since the latest reorganization (in September 2008), the School Centre Ljubljana contains three schools:

  • The Secondary School of Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry,
  • The Secondary Carpentry School,
  • The Anton Aškerc Secondary School.

The following educational programs are available at the Secondary School for Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry:

  • mechanical technician,
  • chemical technician,
  • security technician (new educational program, started in September 2009),
  • adult education (mechanical technician, chemical technician, metal designer, installer of machine installations).

Education organization at the Secondary School for Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry

The Educational programs are carried out at the school and with employers. Practical training takes place in the workshops and laboratories of the Secondary School for Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry and with employers. Field trips to domestic and foreign corporations, research institutes, visiting fairs, exhibitions and other cultural events are an integral part of education. Students may perform research assignments; participate in high school competitions in Slovene, mathematics, and English, and competitions in their professional area both at home and abroad.

Students who actively participate in sports and cultural activities may receive a special status which will help them fulfil their school obligations.

Lessons take place only in the morning, starting at 7:30 and ending at 2:55 pm at the latest.

A textbook fund is in effect in the library. Students may borrow a set of required textbooks for the whole school year.

We have a tradition, a quality teaching staff, and excellently equipped classrooms, laboratories, and workshops. The cooperation between the Secondary School for Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry and companies and factories is exemplary, therefore we can offer our students a quality education for future employment or further studies.

Zdenko Nosan,
Principal

Mechanical technician

Most things on Earth are run by various devices, machines, and robots.

Who know the most about these often complicated systems? It must be technicians, who apply their knowledge in the creation of new products, machines, and appliances, as well as the systems of management and governance in the fields of energetics and engineering, mechatronics, automobilism, environment technology, etc.

The "mechanical technician" secondary educational program is for those who are enthused with technology, computer science, and the new challenges of the modern world in the fields of environmentalism and new technology.

Let your dreams and your talent run wild, be ambitious and persistent, and you will discover the wonderful world of "engineering". You will not be sorry!
